Heritage Grains We Grow
Rouge de Bordeaux Heritage wheat
We grow this French wheat variety of eighteenth-century French Colonial history as an element of The Les Amis du Fort de Chartres Seed to Loaf: Heritage Wheat Revival Project. Part of this heritage project is to re introduce the historic wheat that may have been grown in the area almost 300 years ago using both historic and more modern methods. Our wheat plot started two years ago by planting 1 once of Rouge de Bordeux heritage wheat seed. From that plot we harvested 6 lbs of seed last summer. Last fall we planted 5 lbs of seed in a 200 ft long row plot. This year we hope to harvest enough seed to plant a larger plot and also obtain enough to turn into enough flour for a loaf of bread. We hope to eventually produce enough seed to sell to others and begin using for flour on a regular basis.
You can purchase a packet of our Rouge de Bordeaux wheat seed grown using all natural practices on our farm here.
cherokee white eagle heirloom corn
We started growing heirloom Cherokee White Eagle Heritage Corn in 2018 starting with one small row using one packet of seeds. We harvested the first row of corn that summer and the next year we used that seed to plant a one-acre plot. In the summer of 2019, we harvested that one-acre plot by hand, shelled the corn with our old-fashioned Duensing Family corn sheller that belonged to Jason’s grandpa and ground the corn to feed our heritage pigs. Each year our plot will grow, as well as the satisfaction of growing the circle of sustainability on the farm.
